Our Little House of May
Essays on Life & Living
People ask me all the time how I do it all.
The truth? Some days I don’t.
Some days I’m organized, productive, and crossing things off my to-do list like a machine.
Other days I’m eating dinner in my car, answering emails from a softball field, and wondering if anyone remembered to take the chicken out of the freezer.
Welcome to this season of life.
Right now, life feels like one giant calendar invitation.
Construction meetings.
Job sites.
Tile selections.
Client calls.
Softball tournaments.
Tennis matches.
Recruiting trips.
Flights to Oklahoma.
Meal prep.
Laundry.
Repeat.
And somehow in the middle of all of it, I’m still trying to be present for the moments that matter most.
People often see the finished projects.
The renovated homes.
The pretty kitchens.
The completed flips.
What they don’t see is the laptop sitting in the passenger seat.
The phone calls between innings.
The contractor meetings squeezed between games.
The early mornings.
The late nights.
The constant juggling act.
But here’s what I’ve learned.
There is no perfect balance.
There are only priorities.
Some seasons require more business.
Some seasons require more family.
And sometimes you find yourself trying to give everything 100% at the same time.
I’ve spent years feeling guilty that I wasn’t doing enough.
Not enough at work.
Not enough at home.
Not enough for my kids.
Not enough for myself.
But the older I get, the more I realize that being present matters more than being perfect.
My kids won’t remember whether the laundry was folded.
They’ll remember that I was in the stands.
My clients won’t remember if I answered an email at 9:00 p.m. or 9:30 p.m.
They’ll remember whether I cared about their project.
Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
And honestly, some of my favorite memories have happened in the middle of complete chaos.
Airport runs.
Weekend tournaments.
Late-night talks.
Road trips.
Celebrating wins.
Learning from losses.
Those are the moments that make up a life.
So if you’re reading this while feeling overwhelmed by work, family, schedules, commitments, and trying to keep all the plates spinning…
You’re not alone.
Most of us are figuring it out as we go.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
The dishes can wait.
The email can wait.
The laundry can wait.
The people you love can’t.
And that’s a lesson I’m still learning every day.
